'King of the World' by David Remnick. It you get a chance to read this book, do. It's not so much a sports biography of Muhammad Ali as a fascinating window into the world of civil rights, Malcolm X and America in the 60's. It is about boxing but what made the fighters the men they were, Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson and Cassius Clay. Amazing, but ultimately tragic lives these men led.
