A dog called Patch

Apparently, ever so many years ago, a dog called Patch used to sit at the Station Master's office window and bark at everyone who came to the station.

It was a busy station, so I can imagine he got quite a sore throat at the end of a busy day's barking.

What I don't understand is why it's OK for a dog called Patch to bark at everyone, and I can't.
