Sad tale
A few weeks ago we were given 14 Chabo or Japanese Bantam chickens. One of the hens started brooding and was sitting on 9 eggs, a mix of her own breed & some of the eggs from our normal chickens. After 10 days or so we were out one evening & a friend offered to feed the horses. She then saw the hen house open & wanting to do a favour went in & saw to her delight 9 eggs & quickly took them out & put them in the fridge. She then phoned to say all was well with the horses & the hens were now laying eggs again (we had told her we had only 1 or 2 eggs a day at the moment)!!
Mum started sitting on eggs again, only 1 or hers and 4 large ones. 21 days later, hers hatched plus 2 large ones. Hers was very small & weak compared to the other 2, fell in a very shallow bowl of water & drowned! One of the large chicks was grabbed by a raven after a few days and we now only have the solitary chick in the photo.
Perhaps next spring we can try again. We have to live with 2 wild ravens and at the moment their 2 young ones. They are extremely cheeky but have the advantage that they keep the birds of prey away. We thought our cage for the young ones was safe but the ravens are very clever and bold.
