Hopetoun Monument
This is a noticeable landmark in East Lothian. It was built in 1824 by the "grateful tenants" for the Earl of Hopetoun. One wonders how they afforded it. It has a twin in Fife, erected by the good folk of Cupar in 1826 on Mount Hill to the same Earl. He must have been very popular.
Unlike the one in Fife, for which you need special permission to access, you can climb the dark and very worn spiral stone stairs (132 of them) to the top for an absolutely fantastic view across East Lothian (take a torch). But first you have to climb the short steep Byres Hill to get to the bottom of the monument.
