Where the Romans walked..

A lovely early morning walk this morning with our "doggy" guest.

When we had our dog I used to do this walk, 6.30 in the morning rain or shine, winter and summer. Some days in pitch darkness, others in rain and with the wind driving across the flat fens so hard it was difficult to stand up. Some days like today it was lovely, not to hot and a cool breeze blowing.

We are walking on a raised mound that runs beside a dyke (down the bank on the left of the photo), raised above the flat fields. The dyke was a former Roman canal constructed at the time of the Emperor Nero (37-68AD). It was an immense canal 56 miles long, running from Peterborough to Lincoln, it was one of the greatest feats carried out by engineers of the Roman empire -sadly nowadays it is little more than a ditch.
