I recently heard on the World Service a science report about trees. Apparently it's been discovered that trees communicate with each other 'like humans', using electromagnetic and chemical pathways. They can warn each other about impending insect attack and approaching diseases etc.

Chris Bird's story about the star involves a theme of trees that can communicate with each other. Again, like 'The Sea Books', his story has an element of premonition.
