Magnificent Étretat
Saturday
A glorious day today exploring the spectacular coast around Étretat. Historically a fishing village, Etretat became a popular seaside resort during the 19th century. Its popularity was enhanced by the large number of famous artists and authors who were inspired by Etretat: Monet, Maupassant, Victor Hugo and Flaubert were all enthusiasts of the region, and Monet in particular painted several well known pictures of the coast and cliffs around Etretat. After lunch back at our gite, we moved a little further along the coast to the smaller resort of Yport and finally Fécamp. In the evening we went out to eat at a place in the country, unfortunately a little disappointing as the service was extremely slow, and the food only moderately good.
