Surprise bulb
In the summer we bought some very cheap, end of the season bulbs, most of which didn't do that well. But one group of bulbs produced lush foliage, and in the last couple of weeks this impressive flower head has emerged.
Neither of us remembered planting anything looking quite like this, and a bit of research has revealed that it is Ornithogalum arabicum, a species that's not frost hardy, so not one that we would have planted direct into the ground, even in a sheltered corner. I'm sure that there must have been some confusion in the shop, but we'll make the most of it for now, and then decide how to try and get it through the winter.
