Stocks and chairs.
What a great title for a walk, and in my collage you can see both.
Another Calderdale Heritage Walk.
Started at the Duke of York pub in an area called Stone Chair, Shelf.
We have often wondered why it was called this, and today for the first time we found out there is actually a stone chair!
First erected in 1737 for passengers awaiting the stage coach which stopped here.
This triangular seat was reconstructed in 1891, with signs pointing to Halifax and Bradford on one face, and Brighouse and Denholme Gate on the other.
The stocks from Shelf, also in the collage have been moved from Shelf to Coley.
Such a lot of history on this two and a half hour walk, dating back 900 years.
Mary had difficulty keeping us all in check as there were nearly 40 of us.
An amazing number of people.
Must say a big thank you to her for all the research she has done, and also to make it all so interesting, amusing and not at all dull.
I don't remember History at school being like this!
I have also added to the collage a photo of a sweet little foal and her mum who came over to see us all.
A shot of a very old farm stone showing the three holes where long wooded poles would have been put through to keep the animals in the field. This was before they used gates.
Last photo is of a delightful farm house from the 1700's.
Pity the weather was a bit wet to start with, but it soon cleared up, and in the end the sun came out.
Will certainly have to get my winter coat, scarf, hat and gloves out for next time. Summer clothes now put away until next year!
