Walls of Dubrovnik
Our main reason for taking this trip was to visit Dubrovnik. Today we have and have not been disappointed.
An hours tour of the old city then left us free to do whatever we wanted. First return to the market for a local produce shop before it closed at 1.00 and then a coffee nearby.
We decided to take the cable car up Mt Srd next as it was such a clear day. We were told we were lucky that only three cruises were in port today but the old town was busy and queues for the cable car could be 45 mins. We must have waited just long enough for the tours to leave as we didn't have to wait at all.
The cable car was destroyed in the Homeland war twenty years ago but was reopened 5 years ago. (Amazing how they have restored this place in that time though there are signs still of damage and areas of obviously new roofing etc as well as sad memorials to people who died, mainly in 1992.)
We had lunch at the top overlooking the wonderful walled town, the island of Lokrum in the sparkling Adriatic and the near coastal areas.
Returning there was a marked reduction in numbers on the city streets, much better to be around in the afternoon except for the market.
This picture shows some of the city walls and the Ploce gate leading to the old port below. I like the juxtaposition and different shapes. We didn't walk them today choosing the cable car instead but it is our intention to return on Saturday.
We took the local bus back to our hotel seen on the headland on the second extra. That was great fun but by some miracle we got on and got a seat!
Had a stroll down to the two small beaches below the hotel before dinner. One was pretty much closed but the second one had a bar open so we had a drink until the sun disappeared. Off to dinner now. A lovely day in a magical place.
