The Rain Forest
Well I almost blipped the raindrops on the car window and "dismal niche" , the place that Lewis and Clark landed, thinking they were at the Pacific Ocean and were stranded for 6 days unable to move for the downpour and the wind... but it was just plain grey.and definitely dismal. (The native chinook people could navigate the waters and brought them food) So.... our destination today ( after the wonderful Maritime museum in Astoria which will terrify anyone who is thinking of navigating over the Columbia bar in a small boat) was Lake Quinault and the rain forest. Ah... "home". Feels so good. One of only 3 temperate rain forests and home to some of the largest trees in the world , it was raining the whole way for our walk. But it was lovely. :-) I Wanted to stay at a national park lodge this year as it's the national park system's 100th anniversary. ( started by teddy Roosevelt). This comfy lodge was designed by the same architect as Old Faithful at Yellowstone .. built in1926.
We have an option of one more night away but all of the local weather people are predicting the worst storm since 1962 (!) here tomorrow late and Saturday ( we were here for the next worst in 1993 when the bowsprit of our boat on lake Union got caught under the dock with the wave and wind action) so.. I think we'll head home to Seattle after a nice big lodge breakfast in the Roosevelt restaurant ( FDR was here in 1937). H wants to sleep in his own bed on his birthday tomorrow!
