1066, 950 Years On.

Today is the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, so we thought we'd take a stroll around Battle Abbey and the fields adjacent. Tomorrow and Sunday  are going to see very large re-enactments but it was nice to stroll around the field today watching the protagonists making their preparations on the eve of battle. The Saxon and Norman encampments are kept well apart. Can't be having them socialising prior to the big event. It all felt like a large festival set in medieval times; the smell of cooking and wood smoke, flutes and various medieval instruments playing, fletchers whittling up arrows, soldiers sharpening axes and swords.  Great stuff. Seems like a great weekend out, but they ought to be careful with those arrows, they could have somebody's eye out!!
The historical great and good also turned out to see what all the fuss was about. (see extra pic).
