Today we went to see an exhibition of mummied animals at Liverpool World Museum. Apparently the ancient Egyptians buried many thousands of mummied animals as a sort of prayer to their gods. Those on display came from a consignment of 180000 that were shipped to Liverpool in 1890. They acted as ballast in the ship and were not valued at that time. In fact most were auctioned at the dockside and were then ground up to be used as fertiliser. A fascinating piece of history.
