Pukeko

A member of the Rail family, pukeko are sometimes called swamp hens and are a very common sight in New Zealand.

This handsome chap was on guard minding the missus who is sitting on her nest very close to and in full view of, the foot bridge. Not a very wise decision on their behalf but will give me a ringside seat when the chicks hatch.

They are not flightless but prefer to run rather than fly.  Their flight is often laboured and clumsy. With their big feet more suited to swampy ground, the running can be clumsy too
