Tuesday: False Creek

We had an excellent evening.  It began by attending the opening party of the Vancouver Writers' Fest on Granville Island.  A particular highlight was a short reading by Ivan Coyote, reading from their book, 'The Tomboy Survival Guide'.

From there, we walked to another small theatre nearby where we were able to hear Hisham Matar in conversation, talking about his book, 'The Return', relating to his return to Libya after an absence of 33 years and his attempts to find out what happened to his father who had been a political prisoner there.

After a short gap, we then attended another event, again with Hisham Matar, and the Spanish author, Marcos Torres, on Shakespeare and Cervantes, the influences they have been on them and the meaning they have in their lives.  This one was a particular pleasure as I got to make the opening remarks for the event.

K. and I have purchased Matar's book which he signed - we are blown away by him.  Rarely have I heard such a sensitive, learned man who is so articulate in conveying complex thoughts and who has the real art of listening.  Having met him backstage and chatted to him before the event, this is genuinely the way he is.

And I am so annoyed at not asking for a photo.  This is where I need Folkie's courage.

Instead, I offer you False Creek, taken from Granville Island where we spent the evening.
