The Fleece
Another Tudor building, how I love them! This is The Fleece and it started life in the mid fifteenth century. At some stage it became an ale house. When N and I first visited in 1961 it consisted of two rooms with stone floors. Drinks were ordered across a half door and beer was drawn from barrels on the floor. At that time it was owned by a widow and when she died in 1977 it was taken over by The National Trust. The little rooms remain but more have been added. There is now accommodation and they even do weddings.
We had a quieter day today. We sought out the cottage where N stayed with an aunt to escape the London bombings in 1941. He has stayed there many times since. The kind owners showed us around. Some was just the same but much was altered. The outside was much tidier!
After lunch at The Fleece we pottered around in the car. We visited Burford but didn't stay - too many Saturday trippers!
