Vesuvius and Herculaneum (extra)

It all takes longer than you think, 06:45 bus from Nerano and returning at 19:00 on the last bus..... and we had no time for Pompei! Bus, train, bus, walk up Mount Vesuvius with the rest of the world on half term holidays even though rain was threatened. Down Vesuvius, pasta, yum, walk to the site of an the ancient port of Herculaneum, reversing the journey by train then bus to the campsite.

It was clear what it meant to be burned by the heat blast from the erupting volcano, these skeletons in the arches of the old port would have had their flesh burned off instantly before being buried in the ash. Nowadays the people of Herculaneum and Pompei, live under the shadow of an active volcano. They will know a few days before when it will erupt again with modern methods of detection, then the exodus of millions of people will happen. I cannot imagine living there....
