Above And Beyond...

The Forest Cathedral

This afternoon was a lovely sunny day and we set off for a walk from Redbrook, Monmouthshire, to walk to Newland, Gloucestershire.

The blip photo is a view of All Saints chucrh which is known as The Cathedral of The Forest. The bird is a pheasant that we disturbed that flew off!

It was founded shortly before 1216, sited on a low, flat-topped hill, sheltered by higher hills except to the south where the land descends to the River Wye. The tower was begun in the late 13th century, although the upper stages are of the late 14th or early 15th century. The church was thoroughly restored between 1861 and 1863 The church contains several effigies including that of Sir John and Lady Joyce of Clearwell who died in 1344 and 1362.

After walking through the church grounds, we enjoyed tea and coffee in The Ostrich Inn. A cafetiere for me and a pot for Mrs BB represents excellent value at £4, plus free newspapers to read!  The extra photo shows the inside of this very old Inn.
