Carl Solway Gallery

The Carl Solway Gallery lies within a dilapidated area on the outer edges of Over the Rhine and is not easy to uncover unless one is aware of its existence. Prior to my visit at the gallery, I had previously seen the work of Duane Michal’s in other galleries, but new little about her process or he years in which she had created her photography. It was to my surprise that some of her work such as “Things are Queer” and “Alice’s Mirror” were on display at the Carl Solway Gallery in Cincinnati. I was informed that her photography was created in the late 60’s and early 80’s and was surprised that her series “Things are Queer” was photographed in 1973. When comparing, the dates of the work and the title “Things are Queer”, I was surprised by how progressive of a title this was for the year it was photographed. However, there was a large human rights movement occurring within the United States along the west coast during this time. It seems that every single week, I am more surprised by the wealth of art within the Cincinnati and how big of an art destination it has become in the past decades. The Carl Solway Gallery is yet another example of the incredible art work which is on display all throughout Cincinnati.
