Sow's ear into silk purse

This year's fruit is pretty mediocre, most of it. Waterlogged, cottony. But take a handful of mediocre greengages, add a handful of mediocre peaches, slap in some home-made orange syrup and a dollop of my sister's kiwi jam, melt on gentle heat 10 minutes or so and here's the most delicious fruit compote.
