Penstock

I may have mentioned it before but pressurised water pipe line is called penstock; as opposed to one which allows water to fall freely under gravity but open to the atmosphere; which is just a drainage pipe.
The two pipes here will be joined where the head pressure will be nearly 20 bar. Downwards from here and under even greater pressure the pipe used is rated at 40 bar. There is an obvious kink in the pipe at this future junction and this introduces a sideways force on the system and this will be counteracted by a massive encasing concrete structure; literally a thrust block.
Even to folk who move in such circles they are pretty big numbers.

We got a right soaking today.

(1 bar equiv to 10 metres of head)
