Un/palatable
Another batch of za'atar swirls made for another stall providing information about our local group aiming to settle two or three Syrian families within the community. The nibbles are simple to make using a puff pastry sheet smeared with za'atar spice mix, oil and tomato, rolled up, sliced and baked. Recipe here. They've been pronounced tasty by everyone who's tried them even if the flavours are a little unfamiliar.
But how deeply unpalatable has been the shambles resulting from the demolition of the refugee camp at Calais with substantial numbers of children and young people forced to spend days and nights corralled into makeshift shelters ('containers' - the word says it all) or even left to sleep bed down in the open air. Apart from the gross inhumanity one cannot help but wonder what impression these youngsters are forming of the UK when its officialdom appears so reluctant to accept them and much of its press is so unwelcoming. They have already been through so much to get this far and still the obstacles mount up. What will it do to them?
