Danger of Death
My book tells me that these are prevalent from September onwards. Seeing that it is only just June going on August, I suppose that's a sign of this wonderful summer we're having!
Mycena epipterygia or the Yellow-stemmed Mycena is frequent on stumps and in deciduous and coniferous woodland, often in clumps. So it fits most of that then. The skull and crossbones seems to be marked against the majority of fungi in my guide to fungi and this entry is no different.
I have never found an edible mushroom in this country, not that I've looked too hard, and if I did, I am not sure I would trust my identification of it anyway. In France though, my in-laws are always on the hunt for them and the cepes they find in late August, early September are amazing.
I shall not be eating mushrooms for dinner this evening.
