The Witches Stone
As a child I was absolutely fascinated, even obsessed, by this stone which sits on the main road of the lovely town, Forres, where I grew up.
Forres is a royal and ancient burgh with a long history. In fact, Shakespeare's play Macbeth locates Duncan's castle in Forres, and the Three Witches meet on a heath near the town in the third scene of the play.
Cluny Hill dominates the town, with NelsonsTower keeping a watch over it and this slab commentates the spot where the witches were burned to death- that's if being rolled down the mammoth hill in a spiked barrel wasn't enough.
Only as an adult I discovered there was actually no history of such horrendous things in the town but I still think of all those poor women who were cast out as witches when I climb the hill with the dogs and although it's not a tomb stone as such, this will be my entry for WBC this week.
