Earthworks under Clifton Cliffs

There's some absolutely amazing earthworks going on here, along what used to be known as Peacocks Gallop, under Clifton Cliffs. All the houses along the cliff rim have been removed and now the 'bump' at the western end of the cliffs is being removed. All of it. The part of the cliffs where Cotters House used to be, on that far point, will be gone completely.

We're all intrigued to see how far back they're going to remove the point.
Apparently there are basalt columns inside the far point which could collapse in another big earthquake. They've built a huge berm, out of boulders from the cliffs, some way out from the cliff, and you can see the diggers sitting on top of it, doing some more construction, in the image in Extras. The idea of the berm is that in the event of another big quake, any cliff collapse would be contained inside the berm. All the containers are going to be removed! It's all amazing, and I've never seen any earthworks like it.
