Travels in the Interior

A big day out in the tiny hire car with its little snow tyres. Off we set for the well known sights out on the 'golden circle' within a couple of hours of the town, and soon we were away out in the wilds. Of course I had to stop the car every so often to take snaps of snowy peaks or geothermal activity in the cold air.
First stop was Þingvellir to see the rift valley between the tectonic plates of Europe and North America. A big deal. Then on to Geysir, to see the steaming ground and the Strokkur geyser which fairly spurted away. Quite impressive and a great stench of sulphur, which lingers over much of the countryside. And in the middle of the wilderness there were farms with pastures, silage towers and cows. Milk mystery solved.
Seeing we'd come so far, we headed on the short distance to the waterfalls at Gullfoss. A quick gawp and photo. The wintry sun which had provided a bit of warmth began to settle into low haze so we tanked down the 70km to the coast where we strolled out in a couple of eerily dilapidated fishing villages. All a bit Icelandic Noir.
Back over the hills to Reykavik, to put the feet up and enjoy a generous noggin. All in all, a fine day.
I just realised I haven't renewed my blip membership. They should be paying me! Writing all these words takes a fair bit of effort. As for reading them, well, that's just nuts.
