Remains
The 'Atomic Bomb Dome' has been kept as a reminder of the destruction in Hiroshima. One of only a few buildings near the centre of the explosion that wasn't completely destroyed, it has been preserved, stabilised and made earthquake-proof to serve as a memorial.
It makes a strong impression on the cityscape. The peace memorial park across the river from the Dome has a number of different monuments including a children's memorial and a flame that will keep burning until all nuclear weapons are dismantled. (The extra looks from the museum to the flame and the dome in the distance.)
There seemed to be thousands of school children at the peace memorial and museum, mostly teenagers but some younger. One group of younger ones from a Hiroshima elementary school were approaching foreigners. They had an English script they were following and wanted to know where we came from so they could mark on a world map. I asked a couple of them how old they were but their English skills didn't go beyond what was written in their script and they didn't understand what I asked!
