Luing
A day with nothing important to comment on or record. Lacking a blip I nipped up the road to Eycott Hill Nature reserve thinking I would take some views of Blencathra.park
On arriving at the car I was greeted by a herd of young Luing Cattle. They belong to the Newton Rigg local agricultural College and are being run on the reserve to bring the vegetation back into good condition and keep it like that.
Luing are an interesting breed having been developed on the Scottish Island of the same name late 40s and early 50s. They managed to combine the hardiness of the local Highlanders with the fleshing qualities of the Beef Shorthorn. They have developed as a breed into an animal well suited to upland environments being able to rear their calf under adverse conditions. They are naturally polled (hornless) and need little in the way of labour or building costs.
