Today I stopped to picnic near Donibristle House which overlooks the Forth towards Edinburgh which can be seen in the distance through these gates. The beautiful ornate wrought iron gates in front of Donibristle House are believed to have been gifted to the wife of the fifth Earl of Moray by William of Orange in the 17th century. The coronet and M at the top stand for the Earl of Moray.
As a reward for capturing Edinburgh Castle the 1st Earl of Moray was given the estate of Donibristle by Robert the Bruce. The Earls of Moray were one of the oldest and most important families in Scotland. Their castle was set on fire in 1592 when the Earl was murdered and then the replacement was also destroyed by fire later. Its successor was built around 1720 but this too burnt in 1858 with only the service wings escaping. Part of the buildings burnt in 1984 but today the rebuilt house looks as if it would have been almost 300 years ago but presumably installed with adequate fire prevention.
In the 1960s their estate at Donibristle was developed to make the new town of Dalgety Bay when the Donibristle Royal Naval Air Station was closed.
As there was not much colour I have converted this into mono
