The Road Home
Last day, so of course we had to go see this blue lagoon thing. First disappointment/relief was that it was fully booked. So we nebbed in at the place and nosed about. I don't think we missed much by not standing about in the blue water with the crowds. So we then set off on around the Reykjanes Peninsula - a quite amazing place of recent volcanic activity. Ocht, there were steam vents and bubbly pools, and miles of dark stone with no vegetation. And big cliffs.
And further up the coast, a wee church in a field, and further up still, a fishing village with a seafront of lava blocks where I was able to crack open a last bottle of stout.
And when we got to the airport I found I had 2,000Kr in the back pocket which there was no point in taking home. And imagine - Borg ales at 990Kr a bottle - how very handy. Guess how many I bought. I’d never have guessed that the stout is 11.5% abv though. Well, I did guess shortly thereafter.
So, goodbye Iceland. A fascinating place - we saw two very different countries in the short time we were there. Once you leave Reykjavik with its designer knitwear and artisan coffee shops, you’re much more in touch with how hard a life it’s always been trying to eek a living in such a marginal place. I’d like to say I’ll be back but that list of unvisited places is as long as ever...
