Holes in the ground

They were quite hard work, the footing for the granite setts and the concrete under the pebbles added up to nearly 6 inches in places.
I now have a major blister on my left thumb (from the hammer) and a super bruise on the back of my right hand (from missing the chisel a few times).
But what are they for?
