Wintry Afternoon Walk
A cold north wind's the reason
for leaving well equipped:
first gloves of the season
and windproofs fully zipped.
Late in the day, the sun is low
and dazzlingly bright.
Walking briskly as we go,
our hearts are just as light.
Chewing cattle stand and stare
at where they, too, have hoofed,
while wheeling through the steely air
birds gather, soon to roost.
And now we're heading back to where
home comforts all await us:
slippers, tea, a comfy chair
and warmth will fast sedate us.

If you look closely, you can see the distant hills of Dartmoor, and yet these fields are only minutes away from our door. I love this bit of the world.
