Late Afternoon Light

Now that we have had the time change, what used to be nice early evening light is now late afternoon light.
But it still helps make birds such as this juvenile tricolored heron light up nicely.
He was flying out across the trees toward the back of the marsh and was maybe done for the day.
So how do the birds know it's an hour earlier now?  ;-)
