Penshaw monument is a folly built in 1844 and stands on a 136 m hill overlooking  Washington and Sunderland . The Doric tetrastyle monument is 30 metres (98 ft) long, 16 metres (52 ft) wide and 20 metres (66 ft) high  . In September 1939 John Lambton, 5th Earl of Durham gave Penshaw Monument to the National Trust.
