Greening group

Last year I learnt that our beloved County Council had decided that they would no longer be planting daffodils in Fishguard,or anywhere else , as a cost saving measure. This was a shock as PCC had not passed this information on to the local councils and we were probably at the end of the planting window. I organised a community meeting asap and invited the Deputy Mayor of Tenby to speak and explain how Tenby have taken over responsibility for most of their planting.  The meeting was well attended and an enthusiastic group now called the Fishguard and Goodwick Greening Group was formed under the leadership of Julia Moffet. The group immediately negotiated a deal with PCC so that if the Town Council Bought the bulbs then PCC would plant  them. That done they started planning to change the way the town is planted away from the traditional bedding plants to a much more sustainable approach. The group has grown ,raised much of its own finance and is really enthusiastic about developing an ambitious planting scheme for the towns. Today they were cleaning the beds on the Golden Mile and planting Tenby daffodils instead of the modern varieties PCC have used in the past. PCC used to plant the entire bed with daffs so most of the winter we would have bare soil , now with shrubs and sustainable planting this bed will have colour all year round. The Greening Group is an example of a community group that has successfully replaced PCC and i am sure will improve and expand the planting schemes in town.
