In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow

These are the paper Poppies that I made yesterday

This morning I am remembering being in 5th grade and Mr Milne reciting In Flanders Fields and breaking down before he finished. This has always stuck with me.

How times change. When I was growing up, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, there was a minute of silence to remember and reflect on the lives lost. Even the buses and subways stopped! We are too wrapped up in our own hurried lives for this tiny sacrifice now. What a shame.

In Flanders Fields the Poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the dead: Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders Fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though Poppies grow
In Flanders Fields
