Fotografica

Quite by chance, there is a photographic exhibition in Bergamo this month, which uses imaginatively four historic buildings. The best of theses was the grim former prison Ex Carcere di Sant' Agata.  Another was the Palazzo della Ragione.  All the exhibits related to themes such as refugees and the Arab Spring. Powerful stuff.

We also visited the Accademia Carrara, the highlight of which was Vision of St Hubert with a portrait of a gentleman" by Carlo Ceresa, which was explained to us by a charming art student. The painting was discovered recently in an antique shop in Maastricht and scholars are still working out exactly what it shows. Fascinating. We also visited the nearby Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, where the highlight was a painting of two biscuits by Carlo Benvenuto.

In addition to the art, there were fine views, from the hilltop village of San Virgilio and of the sun setting over the rooftops of Bergamo and the mountains of Lombardy
