...and watching the patio and deck being built in the back yard is a daily education into simple devices that are, literally, an extra set of hands on site.

This is a magnet that can be turned on and off and as the decking is on a steel frame the magnet is used to place the strut in exactly the right position and angle for welding.
AND when that's done it can be used to pick up beams (extra and much longer than this obviously!)..manually or on the end of chains or ropes...and move them into place.
