Mum and the Kids

After being woken at midnight by a 7.5 earthquake (and kept awake by numerous after shocks) Bella and I had an earlier walk than usual.  We took a shortcut through the neighbours' woodlot and when we came to the pond, I was delighted to see a female paradise duck and six duckings breakfasting on duckweed while the male parent kept watch.  Paradise ducks are native to N.Z. and mate for life.
The earthquake was felt throughout the country and caused widespread damage and the loss of two lives. Jasmine is disappointed her school is closed for the day.
A powerful earthquake and a mother duck with her ducklings - nature is both terrible and wonderful.
