Lake Gormire
Today, we drove from York to the Kilburn White Horse and Lake Gormire.
The white horse was created in 1857 and was built by Thomas Taylor after he had seen similar in the chalk downs of southern England. The local school master and his pupils marked it out on the sandstone scarp above Kilburn and volunteers did the excavation and then covered it with limestone to make it white. It's huge! Must have been a tremendous effort.
We walked along the Cleveland way in rather fine weather to a view claimed to be the best in England, but that's just Yorkshire boasting! Lovely nonetheless and Lake Gormire is a natural water, rumoured to be bottomless and to contain the remains of a sunken village. Apparently the Devil also hangs out in a nearby cave. We didn't go there...
Then lunch at the White Swan Ampleforth with Andrew, Katie, Helen and Chris.
A great get together, then finally home after rather a busy but marvellous weekend!
