Any Guesses?

This gorgeous creature is on top of a newly thatched roof. It is a replacement for the thatch that burned in an awful fire which severely gutted a cottage in our village many months ago. It has now been restored beautifully, and this is the thatchers trademark. I feel that it it probably an Owl, but could it be a Meerkat?
