Between fen and mountains

Coronation channel

The Coronation Channel was built in 1953 and flows north from Crowland, through Spalding and out to the Wash. Land in Spalding had been reclaimed from the wetlands mediaeval times. Consequently, Spalding was subject to frequent flooding. The Coronation Channel diverts the excess waters around Spalding and ended the flooding.
I set out on a hastily arranged round trip to Woking at 4.00am with C.  Traffic was stop start on the M25 even at 6.00am but that was not surprising. I was back by lunchtime so had a rest in the afternoon.
