A dull and dreary November day, ideal for baking the Christmas cake using dried fruit soaked in spiced rum and Madeira, left over from past gatherings.

I then threw together a beetroot and chocolate cake, made slightly healthier than it might have been by using sunflower oil, maple syrup and spelt flour. Though we probably undid all those benefits by serving it with a hot fudge sauce!
