Silent Picture

The car did a skid
and U-turned on the wet road
but the brakes didn't squeal.

There was no engine sound either
and I only realised, later,
that I saw no driver behind the wheel.

I would have said, 'Did you see that?'
but the street was deserted.
At least I know the car is real:

I have a photograph. Perhaps,
if I look at it long enough,
it will speak to me.
