Rhinos at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi

Today we went to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi national park. Very different surroundings than Kruger, much more hills and going up and down with our car. It was a very beautiful sight looking out of the car. It was also more difficult to spot the animals here as the bushes were much thicker. We first drove through Hluhluwe and in the afternoon we were driving close to the iMfolozi river. Here we suddenly spotted LOTS of rhinos. It felt as if it was raining rhinos. We were quite happy with that because my boy told me the story of Hluhluwe earlier that day. It thanks to this park that the rhino still exists in such great numbers these days! Due to their conservation efforts the white rhino went from nearly extinct to being present in many parks. Every southern white rhino population has its genetic origin in this park!

We did realize though that despite the rain of rhinos, we had to hurry up somewhat as the gate was closing at 6 and we still had a bit of distance to cross. At what our clock said was 5 to 6 we were at the gate which a friendly gatekeeper opened for us. Half an hour later or so I realized our clock was off by five minutes. Seems like we were just out on time! Outside of the park, we turned on our navigation system which told us that it would take another 4 (!) hours to get to our accomodation. Fortunately after a bit over 2 hours we arrived there already.
