The Purfleet
The Purfleet is this stretch of water by the old Customs House. Lock gates maintain the water lever as the level of the tidal Great Ouse behind me goes up and down by a few metres. Imagine ships moored here, while crew have their discussions with the customs officials.
That's all a long time ago when we were England's third largest port, the Customs House now serves as a tourist information centre but we still have some shipping which enters docks a few hundred metres away..
