History lessons

Another day, another museum; this time Bagenal's Castle in Newry,  It was built in the 16th century on the former site of a 12th century Cistercian abbey.  Bagenal had fled to Ireland after being implicated in a murder.  After serving time as a mercenary for the English crown, he was granted a pardon and given permission by the king to build his castle in this small Irish town.  A lot of people turned up for our focus group and we had a great discussion about the more recent history of the north of Ireland.  The pic is taken from inside the castle, overlooking Newry cathedral and the town.
