Carpetbaggers memorial
Another of our regular days in Northampton, and on the way we visited this memorial on the site of the Harrington US World War II airbase.
The memorial was erected in 1987 and dedicated at a reunion of the Carpetbaggers to the memory of those who did not survive the war. It depicts a Carpetbagger B-24 Liberator taking off.
The words on the top of the memorial explain that the bombers dropped munitions and supplies to underground resistance fighters in Nazi occupied Europe. 208 American aircrew men lost their lives flying from this base.
There is a lot more information about Harrington at the website of the Carpetbagger Aviation Museum.
