Train Drivers Manuals/Kit

Well after completing my shift into the wee small hours I had received my new Drivers kit bag so I emptied out the old bag and placed most of what I carry around in that bag on the table to let you see what we have in our secret bag so I will describe what you can see and give a little more info into there purposes firstly I will do it from left to right on the top row then the same for the second row.So the first book is The Drivers Rule book made up of numerous modules for different situations for example we have modules for Floods and Snow,Signals,Passing signals at Danger,Emergency Procedures,Single Line Working that is just some of the modules to many to mention but you have to know them off by heart we carry them as reference in case you are unsure as amendments get issued on a weekly basis so you have to be up to date with any current changes to rules. The second book is The Scottish Sectional Appendix this has separate modules for different routes it contains information on running lines around Scotland also Local and General instruction to methods of work at certain locations of the routes and info on line speeds the names of locations etc again this is all stuff that we need to know off the top of our head we also have one for the North and east of England as well, The third book is our faults and failure manual for class 220/221 Voyagers note it is still my manual for VirginTrains which the government split our depot in two I ended up with Arriva taking over the east side of the country but is still in date to help with any faults that may occur. The fourth book is the faults and failure manual for class 253/254 HST's and the last book on the top is our conditions of employment which is a handy one to have as if there is something you don't want to do you would check out this book for clarification and if you knew you were in the right you can tell them to RAM it lol ,not that I have to use it much but handy never the less next row is my two safety lamps we only require one but I always have a back up in case ,they can show red, green and white lights depending on the circumstances for using it next book is our station stopping guide which is open at Glasgow Central Station this is for reference in case we are allocated a platform that we don't normally use so if we get signalled into a platform and we have a long train this will tell us how many coaches fit that platform so no one falls out a door onto the track and covers all the stations on all our routes, the wee blue binder is a copy of all the jobs at our depot so we can check our job out on the day, the next book is our GSM-R handbook for instructions on how to use the new generation phones being fitted to trains all around the country also you can see my High Visibility Vest for wearing on the track I also carry route maps with all signal numbers in case we have to report signal failures that you may not have seen the number due to speed or whether it is dark so again a wee insight into the life of a Train Driver and what he carries around with them they are looking at supplying Tablets similar to ipads with all these documents on them to save paper which would be a godsend and are currently looking at a couple of tablets and will be trialing them in the near future so that would be nice anyhow this is my blip for today now to pack this stuff away in my new bag and home for a few zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's
