Hauptkirche Sankt Michaelis
After a much needed lie-in, we headed out to explore more of Hamburg which let me tell you is the most beautiful and varied city. First we climbed (lol jk, took the lift up) the beautiful St Michael's church which had amazing views across the city. Michael (the person not the church) pointed out that in Hamburg there are no houses, literally everyone lives in flats.
While this area was beautiful, we then headed to a completely different part of town called Schanze - like a German version of Brick Lane. Full of hipsters, quirky cafes and little boutique shops. We had a kebab for lunch - not the greasy hangover kind, but the authentic, fresh Turkish kind which was amazing. We nosed round some of the shops and had a drink at a bar called GoldFischGlas (goldfish bowl). Good opportunity to demonstrate how ridiculously cheap Hamburg is - we got a mojito style cocktail for €4.50 which was served in a PINT glass and was ridiculously alcoholic. Pretty sure I've paid more than that for a vodka shot in London.
We headed back to Michael's for dinner and, not gonna lie, also for a nap (priorities). Turned out this was VERY necessary due to the Germans' insane grasp of acceptable going-out hours. We napped from 9-11pm, had some drinks at Michael's, and headed out about 2am. We went back to the Red Light/strip clubby part of town purely because this is where all the cheap and free entry bars are. Went to a bar where every drink cost 99 cents, followed by an Irish pub playing some GREAT (awful) German tunez.
We were hoping to stay out til 6am when the German fishmarket opens, as apparently it is the done thing to buy a fish burger and watch the sunrise. Will have to save that for another visit when the temperature is less arctic and we've had time to mentally adjust to the fact that any human can be awake let alone out at 6am.
